Eoin Colfer to officially open 62nd Wexford Festival Opera
Leading independent electricity and gas provider Energia announces Sponsorship of the Opening Night Fireworks
It was announced today that internationally bestselling author and Wexfordian, Eoin Colfer, will officially open the 62nd Wexford Festival Opera on Wednesday, October 23 at 7pm in a special quayside ceremony and fireworks display, which attracts up to 20,000 people annually.
Eoin, a native of Wexford, showed a keen interest in writing from an early age, writing exciting stories of Vikings, which inhabited his home town once upon a time. Since then, the majority of his published works have been New York Times bestsellers. Recently it was announced that Eoin’s hugely popular Artemis Fowl series is to be adapted for the big screen. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Harvey Weinstein, the film is set to cover the events of the first two books of the series.
However, it wasn’t just writing that interested the young author. As a child, Eoin also performed in the children’s chorus of Wexford Festival Opera. Commenting on being asked to officially open the festival this year, Eoin said, “I am thrilled to be opening this year's festival. The festival has played an important role in every stage of my life in Wexford, and the people the festival has brought together in the town have been an inspiration to me and countless other budding artists. Opening the Festival is the perfect way to celebrate the core connection that I feel with the opera.”
The Fireworks display is undoubtedly the climax of the ceremony and Energia, Ireland’s leading independent energy supplier has come on board to light up the skies over Wexford as the sponsor of the opening night fireworks display.
Chief Executive David McLoughlin commented, “Wexford Festival Opera prides itself on its partnerships with both the local community and also with the commercial sector. Energia’s sponsorship of this year’s opening night fireworks celebration is a great example of bringing both together in one exciting new partnership, which sees Energia extending its existing link with Wexford, of providing the power to light its streets to now also lighting up the Town’s skies on the Festival’s opening night. There is a further parallel with our special guest who we are honoured will open this year’s Festival: Eoin Colfer’s international renown, built on his firm and proud local roots, mirrors Wexford Festival Opera’s global repute from a strong local provenance.”
The sponsorship comes in advance of Energia’s entry into the home energy market in the coming months when the Irish company will begin offering competitive electricity and gas deals to consumers nationwide. Energia has been powering businesses all over Ireland since 1999.
Energia Retail Director Gary Ryan said, “The Wexford Festival Opera is a great community event and an exceptional international festival of opera. The fireworks on the Wexford quays bring everyone together to celebrate the Wexford Festival Opera. We’re delighted to play our part in this community celebration while supporting the national and international success of the Opera. The fireworks over Wexford will undoubtedly be a night to remember, and it’s something for all the family to enjoy.”
